ENERGYUNITED CREWS CONTINUE RESTORATION EFFORTS FOLLOWING TROPICAL STORM HELENE

STATESVILLE, N.C. – EnergyUnited crews continue to make progress as the cooperative works to restore power to all members who were affected by Tropical Storm Helene. At the peak of the storm, nearly 30,000 members were without power across the cooperative’s service area. More than 900,000 North Carolinians are currently without power due to the storm.

To accelerate the restoration process, additional crews from across the nation are joining EnergyUnited’s linemen and technicians. These crews will support restoration efforts in areas hardest hit by severe wind damage, downed trees and flooding. Members should plan to be without power for multiple days and make arrangements for family, pets and those with medical situations. Members searching for open emergency shelters in their area can visit readync.gov. 

“We understand how difficult it is to be without power, and we greatly appreciate our members’ patience as crews have worked to assess damage and begin restoration efforts for this historic storm,” said Steve McCachern, vice president of energy delivery for EnergyUnited. “This storm caused widespread and catastrophic damage across our service area and the Southeast.” 

Important Safety Reminders:

 
Avoid flooded areas: Do not walk through standing water near electrical equipment, as it could present an electrocution hazard. Stay clear of any flooded areas around EnergyUnited’s equipment.  

Stay away from downed power lines: Always assume any downed line is energized and dangerous. Report these sightings immediately to EnergyUnited or local emergency services. 
 
Use generators safely: Ensure generators are placed outdoors and far from windows, doors, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring, as this can cause backfeeding, which poses serious risks to linemen and field personnel.
