October is National Cooperative Month and serves as a reminder of who we are, how far we’ve come and our goal to be member focused. With roots dating back nearly 100 years, EnergyUnited has stayed true to its mission: to serve reliable energy across our communities at competitive prices and enhance the quality of life of our members. I’m proud of the input we receive from you and continually look forward to your feedback at our Member Advisory Committee (MAC) gatherings, annual meetings and community events.
Our MAC meetings occur three times per year across our Lexington, Cornelius/Lake Norman and Statesville service areas. A number of questions came up at our recent MAC meetings that I thought you might find interesting too:
Q. Where does EnergyUnited see our growth in the next five to 10 years?
A. We project to see a growth of roughly 3,000 residential members per year (3%). Our cooperative will serve the new hospital in Lake Norman, and we expect our commercial and industrial growth to remain strong as well.
Q. How do we supply all of the energy we are using?
A. Our power supply comes from a diverse mix of sources: Southern Power, gas generation plants, local solar panels, and the Catawba Nuclear Plant. We collaborate with energy providers by supplying an annual load forecast to project future growth and ensure we meet demand through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Alongside our 80 MW stake in the Catawba Nuclear Plant, we have secured power supply agreements through 2035 to guarantee our cooperative’s energy needs are consistently met.
Q. Does EnergyUnited know what causes each outage, and how do I report and receive outage information?
A. Our team continually evaluates where we can take preventive measures regarding outages. This means we work hard to stay on top of overgrown vegetation that might cause a downed power line, and we replace out-of-date poles with sturdier and more modern models. Advancements in our AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) system alert us to any outages occurring in our service area. Outages can always be reported by calling 1-800-EUnited or through My EnergyHub. The My EnergyHub app is also a great place to stay in the loop of restoration efforts. Ensure you opt in to outage alerts – you can adjust this in your app’s settings.
As CEO, I feel fortunate to hear your questions and engage with our members in this way. If you have not yet, I encourage you to inquire about joining one of our MAC meetings and other community events. You can learn more about or MAC meetings by clicking here. After all, this cooperative doesn’t just belong to one person, but to all of you. Thank you all for your feedback and guidance – your membership truly shapes us into the utility we are today. Happy October, and happy National Cooperative Month!
Sincerely,
Thomas Golden, CEO
